"It's called existentialism... Read a book."
Actually, you schmuck, existentialism is a movement which really doesn't seek to answer the question of whether or not we exist. Existence is taken for granted. Rather, existentialism seeks to give humans answers on how to live an authentic and meaningful life when all of our notions of order and stability have collapsed. The closest existential thinker who might go so far as to engage these questions would be Heideggar, and his claim is entirely that ontology (being) has been ignored by metaphysics.
So, instead of your trite advice of "read a book," I offer this: Read many books, reflect on them, and then take courses taught by people who've done more reading and reflecting than you. Then you can clarify your mistakes, while still engaging in legitimate intellectual sparring with a qualified person.
If you do this, your supercilious attitude won't seem so completely unfounded.

Do we exist or do we just think we exist? Do I exist in my own reality?
